Google Earth Expands to the Sky, Nikon goes to Space

Google’s done it again with their Google Earth product. The latest version now includes the ability to explore the sky above any location on earth. I stumbled across this feature while I was checking out a Gizmodo item on a group in Alberta that sent a Nikon Coolpix camera on a weather balloon along with a APRS tracker to the very edge of the Earth’s atmosphere. On their site (SABLE-3), they included (along with several photos from the camera and other photos of the project) a link to download a Google Earth or Google Maps tour of the balloon’s route. I’d suggest checking it out.

Here’s an image from the camera…. Number 156 taken from ≈ 77,900 ft.

And here’s Google Earth’s YouTube video on the cool new sky feature.
