The infestation of common sense continues…
A district-based Austin City Council up for debate again
In an unexpected, and bold move, a concerned citizen from East Austin has the city council considering a proposal to once again put single-member districts on the ballot for 2008. Unfortunately, due to group stupidity ignorance another misguided citizen is passing around a petition to prevent the city from giving incentives to retail developments. This puts the city in an awkward position because the city charter can only be amended on even numbered years… so if they don’t make a move by January the next chance to bring personal responsibility and accountability to Austin’s city government won’t be until 2010 at the earliest.
The current proposal consists of creating two “super districts” each represented by 3 council members who are elected at-large from within the districts, with each district divided into 3 smaller “sub districts” which will each have a council member elected for the district. Unfortunately the at-large system has been favored over the past 30 years by the hippies, tree huggers, and granola lesbians because it encourages voter apathy outside the central city mainly because of frustration with the inability to make a difference when the population is spread apart compared to areas where the population is denser and can be organized into a voting bloc. This is exactly how the SOS wing nuts took over the city government in the late 80′s-early 90′s and have held it ever since.
So, I figured i should take this opportunity to urge everyone who is concerned about this city finally electing a council with huevos and the nerve to stand up to the whining of the neighborhood association busybodies and environmentalist nut jobs to make sure they make time to attend the public meeting at 5PM Wednesday Sept 26 in the Conley-Guerrero Senior Activities Center in east Austin located at 800 Nile St. The featured speaker will be Gerry Hebert who is the executive director of the Campaign Legal Center in Washington, DC. For more information, read the item in the Statesman’s City Beat Blog.
Stay tuned for further details on these amazing trends as they continue to unfold, and please help fight the great plague of ignorance that threatens the whole world.
