Broken Sky
Okay, so I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not that much of a fan of sappy love stories…. but once in a while I’ll come across one that actually touches a nerve. This is one of them.
The entire film is Spanish with English subtitles… Thankfully they realized the world market and left most of the story to visual action instead of dialogue. The tagline caught me and that’s part of the reason I decided to grab it off the shelves at Blockbuster. It must only be available in certain markets because it didn’t come up at all with any of the searches I tried to do on Blockbuster Online… And since the film was underwritten by Blockbuster, even though it’s from Strand Releasing you’ll probably have to go to your local queer bookstore or buy it online to get it if you don’t see it at Blockbuster.
From the boxcover:
Two university students, Gerardo and Jonás, meet on campus and fall passionately in love. They enjoy a blissful romance until Jonás becomes obsessed with another boy and drives Gerardo into the arms of Sérgio. The young men become entangled in a hypnotic dance of love, longing, rejection, validation, and sexual expression.
Okay, so the “passionately in love” and “blissful romance” bit equate to lots of hot on-screen well… fucking. And I admit… the eye candy on the cover is what drew me to it first… then I read the back when one finally got returned and had to see it.
Okay… here’s the part that got me… I found myself feeling sorry for Gerardo and thinking Jonás was a total prick… I can’t count the number of times I’d thought I found someone special… only to have it degrade into something that just wasn’t right… or to find all of the sudden interest on his part had just fizzled… I understood the confusion and hurt… I’ve experienced that feeling of being alone in the same bed with someone you love… it sucks big time.
But after seeing Gerardo & Sérgio together, Jonás is essentially whipped out of his obsession… Much to my surprise, when all was said and done… I felt more for him than Gerardo at the end. The film had an odd ending that left me both disappointed and happy… but kinda numb towards Gerardo/Sérgio… Jonás pissed away one of the most valuable commodities in the world… unconditional love… and regretted it… while Gerardo found it in someone who’d loved him from afar….
The DVD has a collection of the movie posters that were used to promote the film… and I think one sums it up nicely.
Broken Promises
Broken Heart
Broken Up
Broken Sky
It’s really a good movie if you want to take my non-art film opinion on it… Once you get over the sappy young love and the fact that you have to actually pay attention to the details to see what’s going on…
Okay, that’s all the babbling about movies for tonight… time to see if I can get myself to sleep.
