Amazing what movies can sometimes teach…

As I was watching The Kingdom of Heaven I came across a most interesting and thought provoking quote (from a character who is a priest, no less)…

"I put no stock in religion.
By the word religion, I have seen
fanatics of every denomination be
called the will of God.

Holiness is in right action and courage
on behalf of those who cannot defend
themselves, and goodness.

What God desires is here (in the mind)
and here (in the heart.) And with what
you decide to do everyday, you will be
a good man, or not."

Being faithful, but not so much religious… and having a very different concept of God, the Universe, and the general order of things than most, I can’t really find much fault in that quote, nor much to disagree with. (Find and read the book & movie referenced on my profile… The Universe Is a Green Dragon: A Cosmic Creation Story, and What the Bleep Do We Know?…) Hell, be a pal and buy them via these links, I could use the money! LOL)

In my upbringing sunday school at a Southern Baptist church was very much a frequent, although not constant occurance, and something that always stuck with me was a concept from the one person in the new testament whose words I feel really should be the one the least stock should taken from… Paul. In the book of Hebrews (Hebrews 10:16 to be exact), he speaks of a “New Covenant”… the gist of which is that the ten commandments and the old testament laws no longer applied because God would now place his laws in the heart and mind.

Unfortunately that also leaves plenty of room for fanatics and zealots of every fashion to claim that what they are doing, saying, feeling, or believing is right because God himself has placed this view in their hearts… I still think they should try reading the book they’re beating on the cover of rather than simply manufacturing things and claiming they are written…

And the quote itself for me brings to mind perhaps alot of what’s going on in the world today, and my total disbelief at some of the atrocities we discovered had been committed in Iraq with the deposing of the Hussein regime, and the reactions of the American public and the world with regard to the whole debacle. Perhaps people should be reminded every day of the evil things that go on in the world very graphically and in their face until they summon the courage to do what is right, regardless of what others may think of it. I think I’ll have to resurrect my old personal website and repost some of the very graphic statements that were once there, including the very appropriate banners created by “The Dissident Frogman“. (I recommend reading this site on a regular basis… I also purchased his “Mickey Marx” t-shirt which was produced and distributed by “BureauCrash.” It really pisses off the UT professors and students… so I try to wear it whenever I have cause to visit the campus.)

Stay tuned.

Oooh! And there are multiple versions!
